5 Skills That Will Make You Valuable at Any Job in Kenya

With the right skills, you can be hired at any job as long as you hone them as your own. Just to educate you a little more, skill is the ability to use knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance. Different careers need different skills, but we always have the major ones that cut across. You have an advantage wherever you go when you have the skills we will discuss below.

The more value(skill) you carry, the more advantageous and effective you are at any workplace.

Here are 5 Key Skills required at any Workplace;

Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

No employee wants slow thinking or even, at worst, an employee who has more problems than solutions. Critical thinking is essential at a job because you become a problem solver. The only way to build your thinking is to be informed about so many things. Learn so much, and be informed. Learning from other people, both the good and the bad, educates the mind highly because you would learn from other people’s mistakes and experiences that differ from yours.

Teamwork/Collaboration

Teamwork is necessary for all jobs across the spectrum, regardless of what industry you are in. Employers look for someone’s ability to work with others efficiently.

Everyone has a different skill set they bring to the table. By interacting with your co-workers, you may reach a better conclusion or idea than you would have. When arriving at your new career with quality teamwork skills already in your pocket, you can be a step ahead of the competition.

Professionalism/Strong Work Ethic

There is one characteristic every employer wants their employees to present – professionalism and a strong work ethic. No matter what job you find yourself in after graduation, your employer will expect you to have strong, professional social skills and a great work ethic.

Employees can develop these skills through simple tasks, such as being punctual and having a professional attitude, and through more time-consuming tasks. By having a professional attitude and strong work ethic, employers will be more interested in considering you for promotions, new jobs, or other positive outcomes.

Oral & Written Communication Skills

Communication is a significant skill that makes you very attractive to your employer. Both written and oral communication skills are improved by being a great listener, one who engages actively in speech and body language, among other things.

You can start to improve your written communication skills by organizing your thoughts. When writing, proofread your work to see if it sounds jumbled, like you’re rambling, or if the thoughts do not flow. If this is the case, try creating an outline for your work to ensure your thoughts are cohesive, and then begin writing.

Truth be told, this is the most important skill any employee must have. The ability to speak and write with professionalism even under pressure. However, this is also a skill you might want to take a course on because different employers have different communication styles and you must be able to be flexible with that at all times.

Leadership Skills

By combining critical thinking, teamwork, professionalism, work ethic, and communication skills, you can become a great leader in your workplace. Everybody actually has these skills but in many people, they need to be cultivated. Are yours cultivated?

With the skills I have laid before you above, it’s very possible to become the most valuable employee an employer might have. So, as you get into that new job/career, please try and hone all the above skills, most of all practice them.
